Within the last decade, English has become the main language of communication in the economy, as well as in learning and teaching. This is especially true in the fields of science and technology where non-English publications usually receive less attention than those written in English. Moreover, the standard scientific literature for all subjects taught at the TTC is mainly in English. Therefore English has been selected as the main language of instruction for all subjects. Since English is the main language of instruction throughout the course program an advanced knowledge of English is one of the main qualifications applicants are expected to bring into the Bachelor’s program. A solid foundation in written and spoken English is an absolute precondition for all trainees; this enables them to follow the subject matter taught and thereby effectively participate in classes and workshops.
The curriculum of the degree reflects the importance of English for the TTC’s programme. English is taught throughout the entire programme, and forms more than 50 per cent of the contact hours per week during the first semester. In order to further enhance the quality of English classes each of the groups is split into two separate groups for all English teaching. Additionally, remedial courses are offered after hours and between the semesters. During the program the focus will shift from General English to Technical and Vocational English, thus preparing the trainees to use English as their main language of instruction and enable them to work in an international environment.
English instruction during the first semesters focuses on improving the general level of each trainee. They develop their ability to interact and communicate in English using reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. In the Bachelor’s Program, trainees will reach the level of English required in their vocational discipline. Additionally, they will be able to use English as their main language of instruction during later work assignments. During later semesters, the focus of English instruction shifts to Technical English. Trainees will learn to apply technically specific English in the context of their vocational disciplines. Technical English units are organized in accordance to the demands of the different vocational disciplines and enable the trainees to acquire the necessary skills to later teach their vocational discipline in English. Thus, due to their language skills, graduates of the TTC will be well equipped to work in an international environment.
